RDB's Ethical Dog Breeding Standards
The Responsible Dog Breeder Network Difference
We are a vetted, standards-based network of responsible dog breeders committed to health testing, transparency, and long-term stewardship.
Ethical Breeding Is Not a Label. It’s a Standard.
Breeders formally commit to these requirements before acceptance into the network and are reviewed annually to ensure continued alignment.
Every breeder in our network formally commits to these requirements before acceptance, and continues to uphold them through ongoing review.
Our standards exist to protect:
The health of every dog
The integrity of responsible breeding
The confidence of modern families
Our Ethical Dog Breeding Requirements
Membership reflects a shared commitment to responsible, transparent breeding practices. Membership in the Responsible Dog Breeder Network requires documented compliance with defined ethical breeding standards and State laws.
To become part of the Responsible Dog Breeder Network, breeders must:
- Submit a formal application
- Complete a program and facility review, including a tour
Sign and commit to RDB Ethical Breeding Standards
Complete breed-specific health testing in accordance with established breed recommendations
Disclose health documentation to families before adoption
Maintain clean, safe, enriched living environments
Follow responsible litter planning practices
Ensure puppies go home no earlier than 8 weeks of age
Participate in annual review and continued standards alignment
Required Breed-Specific Health Testing
Health is foundational to responsible dog breeding.
Because each breed carries unique genetic considerations, RDB requires documented completion of all relevant breed-specific health testing prior to breeding, in alignment with national breed club recommendations where applicable.
Health documentation is shared with families before adoption to promote transparency and informed decision-making.
Depending on breed, testing may include:
- OFA Evaluations
- PennHIP Assessments
- Cardiac Certifications
- Eye Certifications (CERF/CAER)
- Breed-specific Genetic Pannels
- Other Recommended Screenings
This commitment to documented health testing helps ensure puppies are bred with long-term wellbeing in mind.
Stewardship & Early Development Standards
Responsible breeding extends beyond genetics.
RDB breeders are committed to:
Early neurological stimulation practices
Socialization protocols
Enrichment expectations
Environmental exposure standards
Disclose health testing documentation
Offer continued guidance and support to families
Responsible breeding is rooted in relationship, not transaction.
Why Ethical Breeding Standards Matter
